What, you’re not hiking?!

For many years, my husband Jim and I (Marji) have planned to hike the Appalachian Trail starting in March of 2013. Jim would have just retired and I would have been retired since June 2012. Our backpacks were packed, food had been dehydrated and we had hiked hundreds of miles to get in shape for the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail (AT). And then, about a month ago, Jim’s employer offered him a 5-month assignment in Australia! After about 1 minute of thinking over our options, we realized that the AT would be there next year, but this opportunity to live Down Under for 5 months was a once-in-a -life-time chance! So the wheels are in motion to get Jim (and me) to Melbourne by mid-March.

The name of this blog, Southern Crossings 2013, comes from one of the more famous constella

tions in the southern hemisphere, the Southern Cross, which we hope to become very adept at finding in the night sky.

So follow along on our adventure and feel free to ask questions or leave comments in the Comment section.

We were totally going to try and find you on the closest part of the AT out here – I guess we will have to wait until next year!! I am so happy you guys are going to go on yet another adventure together – and get paid for it! You’re going to have a blast. I can’t wait to read about it. Liz and I might also end up on your doorstep one day 🙂 Good luck packing up your life for the next 5 months…I can’t believe you are leaving in two weeks!!! How AWESOME!!!! HAVE FUN!!!
